Council. — A full report of yesterday's sitting of tho Council appears in this issue A considerable amount of time was occupied in discussing the railway question, otherwise the sitting would have beon brief. Railway. — We understand Sir Grower' i Presiding Officer, has appointed filr T. U. ( Cook as his deputy, to take the votes at Foxton for the Sandon Kailway. Oats.— My the ss Napier, on Friday, 250 sficks of Blenheim oats arrived. Pahliament. — Parliament opens on Friday next, July 11. Tenders. — The Local Board are calling 3 for tenders for the formation of a drain and footpath. More Trees. — Messrs Thynne, Linton & Co. announce the last of this season's sale of fruit trees. * Choeal Society. — We remind members 1 of tho practice to-morrow evening. A full J and punctual attendance is requested. Another Mill. — The Huia brought on f her last trip from Wellington a boiler and 1 engine, to be erected iv the vicinity of Feildiug, for Mr Roots. Mb Snelson's Case. — A meeting was held at Palmerston last evening, to give expression to the feelings of the residents regard ing the committal of Mr Snelson for a breach of the Arms Act. The people of r Pahnerston, by whom Mr Snelaon is highly respected, are unanimously of opinion that the circumstances of the case point to it as * one in which a nolle proseqtn should be 15 entered. We cordially agiea with these 3 sentiments. Had the affair been at all of a grave character, or had any ground for sus picion of a desire to evade the law been ' shown, we should, quite irrespective of the person, have advocated punishment. The case merely showed that an error had oc 1 curred throught oversight, and the ends of justice would have been fully answered by bringing the case before the Court to give publicity to the law, and then withdrawing it. That Valuation. — At tho recent Highways Board meeting, Mr Dulrymple said, in 1 reference to tho County Council's resolution re defeotiva valuation, that that body should * have specified particular instances. The latest that has coma under our notice, is the fuct that the name of Mr Herman Eockell, the Warden now «itting for Carnarvon, is absent from the valuation roll. Xt was thought by some that he would be diaqua'ified from retaining his seat, but we hear this is not likely, as he was elected under the old valuation roll, upcn which, of course, ' his name occurred. Of course Mr Rockell will be exempt from Highway ratus this year. The Footpaths.— The present condition of Robinson and party's contract for the formation of the footpaths along Mainstreet, from the Awahou Bridge to Burr's corner, should bo a lesson to the Lorcal Board of the necessity of having a definite time fixed for tho completion of works, Their tender was accepted on April B— jusfc three months ago— and so far very little progress has been made. The sand has been nartetl away from one side, and the face of a sandhill broken on the other, but nothing more. In the contract no time is specified for the Completion of the work, but we apprehend it does not follow from that they are to drag on for ever with the work. The Board should at next meeting fix a time for the contract, and inform the contractors that if it is not completed by that time, it will he , takeu over by tho Board, and finished at their expense. In any case, the Board should see the necessity of binding all con--1 tractors to a distinct time. Native Mattebs at Hobowitenua. — A correspondent signing himself " Sufferer and Looker on," writes to us from Horo- . whenua, complaining that recently a rit' nunga was held in that district, at whioh , " some 15 natives from different parts of Manawatu attended, and represented themselves as J.P.s, lawyers, and so forth, and attempted to lead the natives- there to bei lieve that they carry the law in hand, ard have been appointed as above Government, to hear all cases brought beforo them, and have power to settle it in the same manner 1 as Magistrates." He thinks it desirable some one should look into the nutter, as they lead the natives to believe they stand on the same footing as Mr Ward, R.M., and states atill further that this course is helping to foment disturbance amongst the Horowhenua natives. Cordials. — In order to keep paoe with the advance of his business in this part of the district, Mr W. Deards, of the Terraoe End iErated Water and Cordial Manufao tory, has resolved on having an agenoy in Foxton. We are pleased to note that Mr Deards has so la^ge a trade here as to warrant such a pfcep. The Native Difficolty.— Several more parties of ploughmen have been arrested in the Patea district. Over 100 have now beon captured, most of them having been forwarded to Wellington Gaol to await their trial ; the remainder are incarcerated in ' Wanganui. They are to be tried by the L Supreme Court. The ordinary sitting will j be held in a few days, but as the piosecu- , tion will not be prepared, tho native cases ' are likely to be adjourned until the Septem- ' ber sitting. It is said that Dr Buller, who ' iB retained for defence of the ploughmen, in - . tends to move for a special sitting of the j Court, on the ground that, it is infringing their liberty to keep them so long awaiting' ' trial. I Railway Returns.— The receipts upon r the Wanganui Foxton Railway for the four weeks ending 31st May amounted to £3,038 4s Bd. For the year the total receipts were ' £32,334 19s 6d, the total expenditure being £20,410 118.
