CANVASTOWN.

SOCIAL GATHERING.

Express Special Service.

A very pieasant social gathering took place in the Vietcria hall on. Saturday eevnmg, at Which the guest of honour was Gergeant Pilot A. N. Ward, the third and youngest son of Mr and Mrs N. J. Ward, Timati. Other sons are Frank, who left with the 1st Echelon and is wounded and now a prisoner of war in German/, and Major J. N. Ward, 10th L.A.F.V., Blenheim. Notwithstanding the inclement weather a large number of friends and residents of the surrounding districts were present, testifying to the popularity of the young airman, who was born here. Songs were rendered foy Miss B. Barnes (Wellington), and Mrs S. J. Ball. Mrs »S. Scott, Deep Creek, officiated at the piano, being assisted by Mr Joe Wilson; and Mr A. J. Stratford acted as M.C. The supper was served by members of the ladies' Patriotic Committee. On its conclusion, Mr R. J. Diamanti called on the guest of the evening and asked his acceptance of a cheque from the people of Canvastown. Sergeant Pilot Ward, who on i ising to respond was warmly applaudcd, thanked the people for their generous gift; and the singing of for "He's a jolly good fellow" brought to a close this part of the evening.

Dancing was continued and the function concluded with the National nn them. Thanks were accorded Mr A. Monahan, who gave the use of the hall free of charge, and many others who assisted. PERSONAL. Miss B. Barnes and another friend, Wellington, are the guests of Mr and ! Mrs S. Johnson. Mrs W. Bown is visiting her parents Mr and Mrs N. J. Ward. Mr B. Satherley, Blenheim, is spending leave at the residence of Mr and Mrs A. J. Stratford. Mr W. R. Read, Deep Creek, has recovered from his illness and is home again.
