COMPARATIVE LULL AT STALINGRAD.

P-A. Cable.

LONDON, Oct. 11.

The 50th day of the toattle ■ for Stalingrad sees the German attackers fought to at least a tcmporary standstill. Red Star says that although the fighting a.t Stalingrad oontinues fiercely German pressure has somewhat weakened owing to the enormous losses of first-line forcea. Other correspondents describe a slackening of both infantry and tank attacks. Red. Star, however, warns that "the enemy has not given up the idea of capturing the city and is brlnging up fresh reserves for a new onslaught." German artillery and the Luftwaffe are still ceaselessly hammerinsr at Stalingrad, but there has been a, perceptible lull in the1 ground fighting. A German report states that the .struggle is settlmg down to trench warfare. The Moscov correspondent of The Times says that the Germans are largely relying on air power to stem the Russian advances north-west of Stalingrad. The Luftwaffe is constantly over ihe Russian lines v attempting to pln down the infantry. The Russians, however, continue to advance, taking further strong-points and improving their positions.
