AUCKLAND, Sept. 29. Edward Levvis Newman liired a taxi to tak > him out to C'ampbell Road, Onehunga, on 5Ionday afterncon. After staying there for a while, lie toki the driver to> take him to the Onehunga Borough Council Offioe, as he wanted to draw his wages aud would then pay his fare. Hei did not keep his word, hut went into the Oarnegie Tabrary near by, where he was found by Sergeant A. A. Oruiokshank and taken to the Police Station. He then showed fight. He took off his coat and invited both men to come 011. Sergeant Oruickshank accepted the invitation, and a rough and tumble took plaee till both men found themselves on the floor. Science and sobriety proved the Sergeant to be the better mau, aud with the assistance of the taxidriver Newman was placed in the lock-up. This morning in the Cburt Newman pleaded guilty to drunkehness and refusing to pay taxi liire. He was convicted on both charges and fined 10s for the first offence and ordered to pay the taxi' hire, amounting to 28s.
