• : ♦- . ■ The statutory election for the Southland County Council took place on Wednesday last. Of the nine ridings no leas- than five returned their old members ttnopposed Thess ridings were Winton, Waikaia, Toi 'lois, Waihopai and Wallacetbwh; There did not appear to be auy question of vital interest agitating the electors in uny of the ridings except Hokonui, in which the contest assumed a territorial aspect, North v. South The ends of the district were shown to be about evenly balanced, Mr Shanks seenrin-r his return by a majority of 26 only. • In ail the ridings but Awarua the sitting members were returned, Tha loss of Mr Kinross, who stood for that ridinsr, wUlnot be a fleath-blpw to the Council, Following are the detailed returns :—
