LUMSDEN V. WAIKAIA.
Tb.o opening match of tho Waikaia season was played on Monday last, and '■ resulted in a victory for the local team. The weather was unfavorable, being a succession o£ heavy showers of rain and .
hail throughout the day — a great disappointment to both natives and visitors. The' time originally appointed for pitch* ing wickets was 11 o'clock, and several starts were made fcr the ground, but the weather, persisting in h<aving the best of it, the players decided to partake of. lunch before making another attempt. Accordingly at 1 o'clock about 30 people sat down to a sumptuous repast 1 at Collie's Commercial Hotel, when ample justice was done to the good things provided. An adjournment was then made for the ground, and about 2 o'clock play j commenced. Owing to the wet strite of ' the ground small scores were the "order" j of the day, and the match was plajed j out soon after 6 o'clock with the result 5 here stated : —
MATAUEA SCHOOL y. GORE PUBLIC SCHOOL. , : The above match came oft at Gore on Saturday last. The Mataura boys came with the first train from Mataura,: and were accompanied by Mr Humphries, who takes a warm interest in the game even th« juvenile players of it/ ; ;: He also acted as umpire for the visitors'. The Gore boys went in first, and put together 65, the highest scorers being Macara (19) and A. Brennan (10). The Mataura lads could not top the score in two attempts, their scores being 2J? arid 32 respectively. The bowling of Coutts and Brennan was too many for the visitors. The youngsters ' on both sides displayed good cricket, and promise to bo a good source of reinforcement Ho the senior clubs in their respective townships. A scratch match will b e played on iho ground opposite Brennan's this afternoon between sides chosen on the ground. Play will commence at.3p,m. shairp£ A- good attendance at practice is requested in view of forthcoming matches. , The secretary informs me that\tne challenge of the Pukerau club has been accepted for Nov. 29th at Grore. I understand an effort is being made to get up a combined team from the Mataura district to play Invercargili tit an early date. • -" - >;. Point.
