THE SOUTHLAND GRAIN REPORT.

The Southland Farmers' Co-operative Association's report for tho week ending Friday, 18th May, is as follows:~ Wheat— Very few transactions in this grain have taken place. For good wheat millers would give 4s per bushel, but withhold from entering into engagements to any extent. Farmers must look for a market beyond local consumption, but they do not feel disposed to ship to Britain, and to run.the risk of so remote a market. Pending enquiries of what can be done in offering inducements to speculators, little is being done. A considerable quantity of the samples shown is shrivelled and^lean. 1 Oats— A better feeling exists as to the values of 1 plump well-harvested oats, advices from the neighbor- ' ing colonies \ being slightly more encouraging. Wo 1 have a buyer here from Eookhampton, who has pur--1 chased the Augusta from Mr William Todd, and intends 1 to load her up with timber, oats, and potatoes from In--1 rercargill wharf. This gentleman has come especially to try and open up a connection between Rockhampton and New Zealand ports in the exchange of commodi--1 ties. We learn that he represents and is partner of a 1 well-knownlmercantile firm at Bockhamptou, and we h ave little doubt but a good and profitable trade can be 1 established between that place and this. '. Barley— Advices from Melbourne are favorable to 1 sellers, and this cereal will command good prices for ' the season, unless importations are made.from Oregon
