RAGING,
MATAMATA NOTES. It would seen! that the weather will decide as to the movements of Glencairn's owner-trainer over the holidays. The Glen Albyn gelding has been accepted for in the Auckland Cup and if the course is in any way holding prior or on the day of the races lie should rim a good race. If the weather is dry it is possible that Glencairn's mission will be at Stratford and New Plymouth, where he has been nominated in the Cup and Christmas Handicap respectively. Daylight is another Matainataowned equine which has been nomin- ! at'ed for the Stratford meeting. Daylight was a recent winner at Hamilton. A number of Auckland horses, incluuding the two Tauranga winners, Jolly Gay and Daddy's Girl, are bcoked for a southern tour over the Christmas and New Year. » The inducement is undoubtedly the smaller fields which are to be met with at the southern country meetings. The acceptances for the Tirau Racing Club's annual meeting, to be held on New Year's Day, may be considered more than satisfactory, and (he class of horses is well above what is usually competing, a number of winners at totalisator meetings being included. Visitors to Tirau should have an enjoyable day with plenty of excitement. . ~
The Archiestown Marble Arch mare two-year-old, .owned by i-Mr. J. Pohlen, an inmate of R, McMiken's stable at Matamata, is receiving his primary education, and is conducting himself well. During the few weeks he has " been up " the chestnut gelding has made pronounced improvement. He now stands out as a welltrrown and taking two-year-old, who. if looks are not deceiving, should earn honors for his owner. The unluckiest owner over the early country circuit was undoubtedly Mr". W. Egan, of Matamata, the owner of Irene Bruce. After being narrowly defeated into seCond place in two runs at Tauranga,, the mare was taker, to Taumarunui for the following Wednesday's races, where she was again beaten by a half-head for the major prize money. At To, Awamutu on Saturday of last week, Irene Bruce ran into third place a head bef hind the winner. Arizona Maid. Those conversant with the subject state that this race provided the most exciting finish ever seen on the Te Awamutu track. To get into a place in five races on end and not score a win is indeed unfortunate, for there is little in place money unless the number be at the top of the board. Lord Loppy was in the fighting line in the hack race at Te Awamutu ot; Saturday last, but an interference ar. the critical moment, settled a good chance of the Matamata-owned gelding getting a win. Last Watch, who was galloping well a few weeks ago, appeared to train off just before the Tauranga meeting, and Mr. W. Crabb wisely decided on a .short let-up for the' son of Thurnham--Black Watch. When well he gave promise of annexing lienors. Mis.s June, bred by Mr. lu-ank Marshall, of Morrinsville, and the first of Archiestown's gets to win a race, has been nominated for the Tirau meeting. Many horses which have afterwards won plenty, of good races made some of their early attempts at the . Tirau meeting, the most notable recent instances being Royal Abbey and Irene Bruce. With something out of the ordinary show up at the coming meeting?
