THE ARAPUNI ROAD.

METALLING CONTRACT. ! in connection with its undertaking to provide a first-class access road from Putaruru to Arapuni the Public Works Department is immediately having the first 180 chains (21 miles) of this road from the Putaruru railway' station towards the Pakawhcnua stream metalled with Otorohanga shingle. Tntimation to this effect was received at Wednesday’s meeting of the Matamata County Council, when an ; authority for the expenditure of sßolo 1 to carry out this work was received i from the Public Works Department, i which intimated thereon that it would j provide all the money as a free £iant | but wished the Council to have the work done. . i Several tenders were received Joi the work and the engineer, who had ' advertised the work meanwhile, explained that the contract included j preliminary re-forming of the road preparatory to the laying of the shingle. The prices ranged from 3s <>d to 8s per yard but it was stated that the lowest tenderer, from Waihi, had not seen the specifications nor was his tender accompanied hy a deposit. The matter was left to the chairman, the riding member concerned (Cr. E. J. Darby) and the engineer I with power to act.
