Matamata Branch Meeting The monthly meeting of the 1 Matamata branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday evening last. Mr H. Rollett presided over a good attendance. A letter was received from the Waitoa Drainage Board with reference to the proposed formation of a River Board to control suggested improvements to the Waitoa River. The matter was discussed at some length and the chairman moved that the Branch s representation at the Board s conferonco bo loft in tbo hands ol Mr G- Duxfieldto arrange. LETTER BOXES The chairman stated that the committee appointed to work in conjunction with the Town Board and Chamber of Commerce in endeavoring to get receiving boxes erected at the glaxo factory and the school had received a communication from the chief postmastei at Auckland asking for a plan showing the locality in which the boxes were required. Mr Price was deputed to furnish the necessary information. VETERINARY SURGEON The secretary 'Stated that no reply had been received to the branch’s from Dr Reakes regarding a resident veterinary surgeon. It was decided to again communicate with Dr Reakes and to point out that the matter is a very urgent one. RETURNED SOLDIERS Some discussion took place in connection with the fact that soldier settlers who were absent at the front in November last were unable to acquire the freehold of their properties, as the option expired on November 11th. Mr Price moved : “ That a letter be forwarded to the Hon W. H. Herries asking him to use his influence in endeavoring to get for returned soldiers the privilege of acquiring, the freehold of their properties, as these men were absent from the Dominion when the option expired-’’ REPATRIATION COMMITTEE Mr Price urged upon the branch the growing necessity for a Repatriation Committee in Matamata to further the interests of returned soldiers. After considerable discussion .vtj was decided that the MVarrman and Mr Pricejftf-ir'committee to gather aJJ-'a'vailable information on file matter and to report at next meeting. FARMERS’ UNION POLITI- • ' CAL PLATFORM . A lengthy circular from the Auckland office set out in detail the political platform which it was proposed should be adopted by the Union in connection with the coming general election. After a little discussion it was decided that the circular be received.
