PUTARURU.

A well-known Maori chief Anui Pui, died at Ngatiro a few days ago. Natives from Putaruru and all parts of the Waikato have assembled at Ngatiro in large numbers to take part in a tangi. The Putaruru District Development Board has in hand the matter of applying to the Matamata County Council for a poll on the question of rating on unimproved value. Mr C. Snell, of Tirau, has purchased a section opposite the postoffice on which he intends building a garage and engineering shop. A serious accident was narrowly averted near Putaruru on Sunday when a travelling vaudeville company got into difficulties. A caravan, to which was attached seven horses, was being driven along the Tirau road from Putaruru when the horses got out of hand. The animals careered along the road, and as they were approaching a bridge, the driver, fearing that serious damage would be done, pulled the animals off the road. The vehicle capsized: Luckily the occupants of the caravan and the horses escaped unhurt, and after some difficulty the vehicle was righted. Mr E. A. Scholz, carrier, Putaruru, has made arrangements with the T.T.T. Co. for the prompt delivery of all orders for timber at Matamata, Putaruru, and surrounding districts. A man named John Murray was charged before Messrs R. Alcorn and J. Barr-Brown, J.’sP., on Tuesday, with using obscene language. was fined £2 and 78 costs.
