HINUERA.
A welcome home social was tendered at Hinuera recently to Private " Dick " ("otter, who has returned after two years active service in France. Friends wore present from all the adjacent districts, and the function proved to be what was intended, a re-union of the popular soldier and his friends. Some particularly good concert items were staged, among those contributing being Miss Myra Ross, Mrs F. M. Darby and Miss Cotter (duet), Miss Cotter, Misses Cobb (concert items) Misses Barnes (concert items), Miss Wells (Kaimai)and Mr T. Cotter. A recitation was also given by Mr J. Pohlon. During the evening several complimentary speeches were made, the speakers being Mr W. T. Darby and Mr J. Pohlen, who spoke on behalf of the guests. Mr J. Cotter welcomed the assemblage. The music for the dances was played by Mr and Mrs Darby, and Miss Winnie Cotter. Extras were played by Miss Myra Ross. The evening was characteristic of the people of Hinuera, which means that it was in every way successful and a suitable reception to a soldier who had been through to the Rhine. The supper was an elaborate one and was one of the many features of the evening. The result of the function was a striking testimony to the Cotter family, and the soldier brother of whom there are none more respected in the district A petition is being circulated here, for presentation to the Minister for Railways, asking that the express train (when the regular service is resumed) be stopped at Hinuera. The residents claim that the settlement is much more closely settled than many other "stops" along the same line, and that it is not a fair thing for them to be behind in their mails, in the present days of keen competition. As matters are the residents cannot reply to communications by return mail, to say nothing of the delay or waste of time caused to thrifty settlers by having to travel to another station by a slow train, waiting, and then travelling from there by the express. The settlers feel confident that the Minister, who knows their district will recognise the soundness of their roquest, and will, when ho is loss harassed, grant them justice.
