A Conservative M.P., who wrote to a distinguished general congratulating him on his services during the war, and saying that Ireland is proud of him, has received the following characteristically modest reply:— November 13th, 1918.—There is somo " disorder " aboard, because I am getting credit for helping to win this war, and in all truth I have done noxt to nothing; and yet, and all the time, I am an Irishman, linlf rebel, half loyal, half merry, half-and-half an angel, half-all-human. As I was walking in the crowds yesterday I overtook a woman who was crying. I asked her if I could help her in her distress. Sho answered, "I am not in distress; lam very happy; I have lost four sons in this war, and now I know it has not been in vain." What is my quota compared with that. ■
