WORK IN MATAMATA COUNTY
Engineer's Report. The engineer, Mr P. Shannon, submitted Lis report for the month as follows: — "In the Matamata riding McKibbon has made good progress with his sauding contract. Murphy has also made good progress with his sanding contract on Quintan's road. Hutcheaon has nearly completed the work on the road between Quintan's road and the Waihou bridge Gravesou has made good progress with the road giving access to Moore's section, and O'Neill has been engaged in surface work and fencing in sand-pits. In the Patetere riding Simpson and Jones havo made fair progress with their contiact, and Fraser is making fair progress with the Omahine stream bridge. Thomson has completed the Rotorua road through the bush in a satisfactory manner. Ho has also reformed the road from Kittow's to the Waimakarere bridge. Clay completed the grader work on the Waiomou roads, and not requiring him any longer he left for work in another county. After inspecting the roads in the riding with the chairman I have called tenders for five contracts for sanding, including Lake's flat on the Tirau to Putaruru road, road from Hot Springs hill to Okoroire station, Tirau to Matamata, Miller's hill, Hinuera Valley road and Totman's road. There are no trucks yet available for supply of metal. Planks have been procured for repairs to some of our bridges; and Marsh has been engaged in surface work. A number of new planks are required on the Waipa bridge near the Waikato river.
In the Maungatautari riding Grinter and Kelly have made a start with the Horahora metalling contract. Mahood has completed the grader work, and is making good progress with his gravelling contract, and should finish early next week; he will then proceed with the gravelling and sanding in the Taotaoroa riding on the Tirau to Cambridge road. In the Taotaoroa riding Mullain has been engaged on surface work.
In the Putarnru riding Strong- litis been engaged in plough and scoop work at Pularuru township. The quarrying of stone for metalling the township roads is proceeding. Biasett lias been engaged in grader, plough and scoop work at Maraetai. On the Putaruru to Waotu and Puketarua roads Henderson has been engaged in plough and grader work, reforming these roads, and has completed eleven miles during the month at a cost of £ll 12s Gd per mile or 2s lid per chains, including putting in several culverts and repairs to two bridges. His work in this locality is nearly completed. I then propose sending him to work on the Ngatiri Okohiriki road giving access to the Bartholomew's mill. In company with Or. Rollett I inspected the road to Slade-Gully'sand Hammond's, and arranged to take the neccessary levels at once, and forthwith proceed with the culvert and formation. In company with Or. Barnett I inspected the road giving access to Irwin's property through the bush from Waotu, and we decided to do clearing and stumping to the amount of £3O.
