A GREAT RECORD.
Pairere Cow's Performance. A remarkable record has been established by the registered shorthorn dairy cow " Gertrude " (6 years old), owned by Mr J. W. Anderson of Tirau, under Association test. Gertrude calved on September 25th, 1917, and in nine months —to the end of June — yielded 13,0861bs of milk which gave 530 lbs butter fat. At Glaxo prices Gertrude's contribution to the wealth of the country would be over £53. She was milked under ordinary conditions twice a day, with 98 other cows, and received no special treatment. The record would have doubtless been improved upon had she, like other record breakers, been milked three times each day, as in the flush she was giving as much as 531bs of milk at a milking, which is too much for a cow under test to carry. Gertrude was dried off at the end of June owing to her coming in early. She calved this year on August 28th. Mr Anderson is to be congratulated on possessing such a remarkable animal.
