; PBIVA.TE JOHN BA.RTJGH.. Last; week./- Matamata ldrit anotho.ri /of its respected sons, killed in action in France, in the , person of Private John Barugh, eldest son of Mr F. Barugh, of Tower road. John Barugh was; born In East Yorkshire and came to New Zealand with his father at the age of 13 years. He went to the Bombay school, but vbry soon left that district with his family for Matamata when the settlement was opened up. He left New Zealand with the 18th reinforcements, and has been in France practically continuously since the Messines battle. He was attached to a machine gun section, and was twice slightly wounded prior to receiving the wounds which proved fatal. “Jack ” Barugh was a quiet, industrious fellow, and was well liked by all who knew him. He has two brotherslon service ; one, Fred, is recovering from wounds in Egypt, while William is at Trentham awaiting embarkation. General sympathy has been extended to the bereaved family.

PRIVATE A. F. M. SHANNON Private A. F. M. Shannon, killed in action, was the eldest son of Mr F. Shannon, county engineer, of Tirau, and late of Warkworth, Rodney. He was bor.npin Rodney county, was educated at the Warkworth school, and on leaving school went on the farm with his uncles, the Ryan Bros., at Hakaru, until he became of age, and then enlisted and was posted to the 12th reinforcements, and went with them to Egypt, thence to England, where he completed his training before going to France. He arrived in August, 1916, and took part in the battle of the Somme and Armentieres. At the end of the year he was invalided to England. On his recovery he went to Sling camp, and ; from there i-e-joined his company in in France in March last, remaining there up to the time he was killed in action on the 25ch August. He was always very keen in outdoor sports of all kinds, and prominent in hockey and tennis, taking part in many tournaments; .' He was a great favorite among his companions. General sympathy has been extended to his family.
