HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER.

THE meeting last week in Auckland to consider a hydro-electric scheme for the Auckland province proved through the large attendance that the importance of the project is fully realised. Two suggestions were made. The first was that Lake Taupo should be utilised as the source of power for the whole of the North Island. This would do away with any antagonism between Auckland and Wellington, and would unite the entire North Island in the campaign. The smaller scheme was that the Government should at once take over the Horahora plant. It was considered the expenditure of an additional £IOO,OOO would provide sufficient power to meet the requirements of the Auckland province for the next decade. The second proposal is one of especial interest to this district. The Horahora lines pass right through the Matamata district, and were the Government to take over this scheme the whole of that part of the country could speedily have the benefits of the current. It is a question which we hope to see keenly taken up by the whole of the district from Morrinsville to Putaruru. It is a matter for united action, and if the newly-formed league should decide in favor of this proposal then this district should do its utmost in supporting the scheme.
