The Matamata County Red Cross Campaign concludes on Monday evening next.
The rainfall for August as recorded at Tirau, by Mr F. Shannon, was 2.86 in. The maximun fall was .73 in. on the 7th.
The principal prizes in connection with the Matamata Surprise Packet campaign will be drawn at the concert on Friday night. A grand parade and carnival will be held on the Recreation ground on Saturday. Charlie Chaplin and John Bunny will be there.
Nominations for the Town board election close with the returning officer, Mr B. Blennerhassett, at noon on Wednesday next.
Out of every £1 subscribed to the Red Cross 19s 8d goes towards giving immediate relief to the striken soldier or sailor. The balance —4d —is for administrative expenses.
It is estimated that the combined turnover of the Waikato Co-operative Cheese and Butter companies for the past year will amount to over a half million sterling.
The secretary of the Matamata Fish and Game Conservation
society has received notice from Auckland to the effect that 40,000 fry have been allotted to Putaruru and 12,000 to Matamat ■>.
Mr N. Blackburn has dispos'-i of his property of 134 acres at Te Poi, to Mr P. Quinlan, • f Taihoa. The latter takes posses sion at once. We understand also that Mr D. Clark has sold his property at Okauia.
Attention is drawn to the Khaki Queen's advertisement in this issue notifying that the Art Union has been extended to next Saturday at 6 p.m. The winning number will be drawn the same night after the pictures and ticket sellers are asked to return all books before midday on Saturday.
A grand concert —the concert of the carnival —will be held on behalf of the Green Queen in the Matamata hall to-morrow night. Artists from Waiuku, Hamilton and Rotorua (returned soldiers and others) will render items. The green pierrots. will make their debut. The concert will be followed by a dance. A number of head of cattle and horses were sold by the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd at the sale yesterday for the Red Cross. The total realised was £274 ss, apportioned to the different queens as follows: — Taihoa £ll9 9s; Turanga-o-moana £59 12s 6d; Matamata £33 lis 6d ; Peria £46 7s ; Wabaroa £7 2s 6d; Hinuera £57 17s 6d. Good piano for sale. Man to milk wanted. Girl's fawn coat lost. Youth wanted for farm work. Quantity of iron and a copper for sale. Bronze turkey hen and gobblers for sale. A good farming proposition offered by Messrs Finnerty and Darby.
