FANCY DRESS CARNIVAL

EVSatamata Queen's Function. On Saturday a carnival, which was organised by the Red queen's supporters, was held on the Domain, and, as far as it went, was in every way successful until an accident to a footballer marred the proceedings. A "dark town band " paraded the town and some out districts from about 11.30, the members of which were seated in a decorated waggon, kindly lent by Mr Crabb. They were proceeded by " John Bunny," " Chirgwin," " Johnny Danvers," and four gollywogs on horses and Shetland ponies, the procession being completed with " Blue-bird" and "Charlie Chaplin" (G. Vogt) in the rear. At about 2.30 the band, under Mr W. Darby (King Golly wog), and two teams of footballers in good fancy costumes, marched down to the Domain where a sports meeting was in progress. There was a splendid attendance and a most enjoyable afternoon was promised. One spell of burlesque football was 'playedf ~~""0harlie Chapliri",'*""as--sisted by " John Bunny" and "Mrs Potts," scoring tries. The latter was converted by "Uncle Sam"(G. Devey). The footballers then lined up for a 100 yards fancy costume race, when the accident happened. "Uncle Sam" was in the lead, slightly in front of" George Seager " (C. Stewart) when the latter was brought down by " Charlie Chaplin." Another player, " Mrs Golightly " was brought down by the fallen one. When Stewart was picked up it was seen that he was badly stunned. He was attended by Dr and Mrs Carolan and removed to the Kapai Whare hospital. After the accident those present were disinclined to go on with the proceedings. The characters of " John Bunny " and " Chirgwin " and "Johnny Danvers" were played by Messrs J. Cartwright, R. Burke and D. Laird. About 30 other men were in fancy costume. The ladies were doing good business at a confectionery and fruit stall and altogether about £2O was taken. The children were particularly delighted with the antics of " Charlie Chaplin." The players, bandsmen, and ladies are to be complimented on the effort which promised an even larger amount being gained. There is every prospect of the programme being completed on a future occasion.
