OKAUIA.
On Saturday the Opal springs were placed at the disposal of the Red Cross committee by Capt. Tizard, and a bazaar in aid of the “Blue queen” was held at this popular resort. . Mr and Mrs Clark fixed artistrc decorations of nikau palms at the entrance and around the verandah, and arranged an attractive display of fancy articles, ferns in fancy pots, lolly baskets, jams, pickles, flowers, vegetables, poultry, etc., all donated by Okauia people. When the “ Blue queen ” arrived she was accorded a royal reception. The cash results-of the bazaar at time of writing had not. been handed in, but it is believed to be about £2O- - Farmers’ Union held their monthly meeting on Monday, when there were present Messrs Jones, Sutherland, Grenville, Hopkins, Fogerty and Mathers. It was resolved that future meeting should close at 10 o’clock. A letter was read from the secretary of the Sub-provincial district urging branches to pay their contributions or the organisation must fail for want of financial support. The local secretary was directed to write to unfinancial members and request payment of subscriptions. The chairman undertook to write to the organising secretary drawing his attention to the undue profits made out of bran, and ask, “What is the Board of Trade price of benzine ?” Also to suggest that the Government should buy slag for distribution after the war. After discussing the question of county ridings, the general opinion was in favor of dividing the county into smaller ridings so that one councillor may represent each riding.
