WAHAROA.
In response to the general appeal for Red Cross funds a meeting was held in the Waharoa hall on Friday evening, the sth inst. There was a very enthusiastic and representative gathering, Mr A. J. Tong acting as chairman and Mr J. Biyth as secretary. Mr J. Price, of Matamata, addressed the meeting and explained the objects of the campaign. Four queens were nominated : Mrs J. Biyth, proposed by Mr A. K. Weeks and seconded by Mr W. Ryan ; Mrs A. J. Tong, proposed by Mr Elliott, seconded by Mr McMillan ; Mis& Casey, proposed by Mr Howard, seconded by Mr Thomson, senr.; Miss Scott, who declined the honor, proposed by Mr Howard. The voting results placed Mrs A. J. Tong as the queen for Waharoa district. This lady is deservedly popular, and her subjects will doubtless do their utmost to place her at the top of the poll. A crowning ceremony is to take place shortly. The fortnightly Red Cross meeting was well attended on the 26th ult., when afternoon tea was served by Mrs King. A parcel of comforts was packed and forwarded to the Morrinsville centre. A donation of £l4 3s has been handed in by Mr J. J. Ryan, secretary of the local athletic club, this included £1 17s returned prize-money. This contribution is most opportune, and just about squares the debit balance of the society’s accounts. Mr J. Ryan is spending his annual holiday in Canterbury. Mr and Mrs A. Forsman and family have returned from a month’s holiday at Devonport. Mr and Mrs Whitworth and little daughter have been visiting Auckland. The late popular relieving teacher of the Waharoa school, Miss F. M. Gregson, was presented last week with a very nice hair brush as a token of the respect and affection felt for her by the pupils. , Advantage was taken of her return from Rotorua to make the presentation as she passed through Waharoa on route to her home in Auckland. Miss M. D. Maxwell, of Drury, is the new assistant. A further collection of £2 5s has been made in the Waharoa school and Sunday school towards Dr. Bamardo’s homes in London. This brings the amount up to about £l4 for the last twenty months. The children’s dancing class, conducted by Mrs F. H. Wade in the Waharoa hall on Thursday afternoons, is much appreciated by the little ones and their parents. The fees accruing from the same are donated to the hall fund.
