HUNGAHUNGA DRAINAGE BOARD.
July Meeting. Mr J. A. Clothier presided at Saturday’s meeting of the above board, and there were also present Trustees J. Pohlen, F. E. Hughes and J. Oit. BY-LAWS. The Eltham Drainage board intimated that it already has bylaws which appear to meet all needs. £IOOO LOAN. The superintendent, State Advances board, advised that the proposed loan of £IOOO for drainage work had been gazetted. DEPUTATION. Mr T. Thompson, Waharoa, advised that a deputation would wait on the board re a drain affecting their lands. He stated the settlers were prepared to advance the money for the work. The proposed drain is nearly 70 chains in length, and would cost approximately £lO7. The deputation, Messrs Weeks, Thompson, Ryan and J. C. Smith, explained their position, saying an outlet was absolutely necessary, as owing to the increased value of the lands they could not afford to have the land unproductive. The chairman said the offer was a very reasonable one. The engineer (Mr W. R. Johnson) said that after inspecting the locality he was of opinion that the cost would be higher than previously estimated. He had called tenders for a length of about 40 chains to give temporary relief. The whole cost would be about £2OO. The deputation’s offer would give direct relief until the whole work could be completed. It was unanimously agreed to accept the offer. A WAIHEKA.U DRAIN. Messrs Forsman, Edwards and Ogden waited on the board asking for improvements in the Waihekau district for which a special loan of £SOOO was proposed. The engineer explained Ithe position, and handed in an estimate, in detail and sections, for the whole work. The deputation, he understood, was prepared to advance the money to do the work against the raising of the loan. The deputation’s offer was accepted. PIRAUNUI CREEK. The contractor, for some work in the Piraunui creek, wrote that he had tried to finish the work as instructed, but the recent heavy rains had made work impossible, probably until next season. He suggested the board should pay him for work already done and cancel the contract. The chairman stated the position, the board having put men on to complete the work. It was decided to depute the chairman and clerk to make an adjustment. TENDERS. The tender of T. Nobilo at £2 16s 5d per chain was accepted for contract No. 98, Thompson’s outlet, Waharoa, about 40 chains. Tenders are to be called for cleaning about two miles of the Waiharakeke stream; also for Kirkness Bros.’ outlet drain. The engineer’s report was approved. ORONGOMAIROA. The question of improving drains through Chudleigh’s was referred to, and the chairman and engineer will take an early opportunity of inspecting the locality to decide what should be done. £SOOO LOAN. It was decided to apply to the State Advances’ office for a loan of £SOOO for the Waihekau and subsidiary outlets.
