SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.
MATAMATA. At Matamata five of the old committee wore re-elected. One member, Mr A. Yardley, did not seek re-election, while Mr B. Schwarz was unsuccessful. There were thirteen candidates. Mr J. Pohlen, in giving a verbal annual report referred to the rapid growth of the school, and stated that the number of scholars had increased by 54 during the year. There were now * over two hundred scholars on the roll. He also referred to the committee’s action in connection with the higher status of the school. There were thirty-one householders in attendance. Tho election resulted as follows: J. Pohlen (chairman) 14, S. Gunn (secretary) 26, W. Egan 21, G. Duxfield 21, J. Draper 20, Rev. R. W. Jackson 18, R. Hope 15. Unsuccessful: Messrs J. F. Vosper, W. Richards, H. G. Cave, B. Schwarz, B. C. Taylor, W. Ruthe. WAHAROA. Considerable interest was displayed and the election was marked by the defeat of Mr. J. Tyson, who had held the position of chairman continuously for the last seven years. Over fifty householders were present. The old committee was returned with the exception of Mr Tyson, who was replaced by Mr T. S Whitworth. The voting was as follows J. Carroll (chairman) 41, T. The meeting was one of the largest ever held in the district. Mr J. Barr-Brown was voted to the chair. Fifty-four householders recorded their votes, and the ballot resulted as follows Mrs J. Small potatoes for sale at 2s 6d per bag. A quantity of old bricks, sheet iron etc., for sale. A child’s pony is advertised for sale. A horse, gig and harness and Stewart horse clipper are advertised for sale. You’ll be pleased with the winter goods at Miss Cummings drapery emporium. The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency, Ltd., will hold a clearing sale for Mr T. Grason on the farm at Okauia on Monday next. Among the lots to be offered will be 16 choice dairy cows, 2 bulls, calves and implements. The same firm will hold a sale for Mr W. Bartlett on May 28. The Farmers’ Co-op. Auctioneering company will hold a clearing sale on Saturday for Mr D. J. Nathan, on the farm, Matamata. The stock to be sold includes 200 specially picked heifers (150 of which are Shorthorn, due August and September), 5 two year Shorthorn bulls, especially well bred, and draught mares and geldings. The stock is good and there should be keen competition.
OKAUIA. FARMERS’ UNION MEETING. The monthly meeting was held on Friday, April 19th, when there were present* Messrs Whyte, Jones, Baxendine, Austing, Hopkins, Sutherland, R. Garland, Grenville, Fogerty, McDonald and Vosper. Some members drew attention to the omission of details relating to the executive’s action in connection with the appeal re Pvt. McDonald, and the chairman replied that the executive had supported Mr McDonald’s appeal to the Military board, asking for his son to be exempted till the end of the milking season. Correspondence from the provincial secretary recommending the formation of a committee to advise returned soldiers on the management of their farms was read ; also a letter drawing attention to “ Farmers’ Week.” The chairman presented the report of the Morrinsville meeting, which was road and received. It was decided to entertain the Minister for Lands when he passes through the district, and a deputation to meet him was formed consisting of Messrs Whyte, 0. Garland and Vosper, with the following committee to make arrangements: — Messrs Jones, Sutherland, Hopkins, R. Garland, McDonald, Baxendine aud Austing. Mi 1 Hopkins introduced a discussion on the price of benzine, and it was decided that the chairman should consult the organiser of the sub-provincial district with regard to taking action. The chairman reported that the collection paid to the subprovincial district fund in aid of the King Country sufferers amounted to £24. Messrs McDonald and Whyte were elected delegates to attend the meeting at Matamata to discuss the proposed soldiers’ memorial at Hamilton, in respect of which it was decided no action should be taken. The treasurer was authorised to pay the levy due to the provincial district committee, and Jt was decided to open an account in the Bank of New Zealand.
