HAMILTON SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL.
Discussed by Piako County Council. Time Inopportune. At Monday’s meeting of the Piako County council a letter was received from the Waikato Soldiers’ Memorial committee suggesting that the council call a public meeting to define the boundaries. The chairman favored the matter being held over, and expressed the opinion that at the present time the money would be needed for other purposes. Cr. Fitzgerald considered the proposal was too previous. “We have not won the war yet.” In his opinion it was a movement to beautify a piece of waste land in Hamilton, and “I’m not one to do it.” The chairman questioned whether a club was the most desirable form for a memorial? Was it a good thing to encourage men to congregate in any town ? Cr. Fitzgerald was against a club. Cr. Smith pointed out that the war had taken a different turn since the proposal was mooted. The council decided to reply that it considered the time inopportune to proceed further with the matter as the money might be required for a great deal more important objects.
