MATAMATA TOWN BOARD.
April Meeting. The monthly meeting of the Matamata Town Board was held on Monday evening, the chairman, Mr J. Price, presiding. Messrs E. C. Banks, W. A. Gor-, don, J. Pohlen and J. F. Yosper were present. VOTE OF SYMPATHY. Before proceeding with the business of the meeting the chairman moved a deep and sincere vote of sympathy with Mr and Mrs Yardley and family in their recent sad bereavement. This was carried in silence. WAIKATO SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL. The chairman of the Waikato Soldiers’ memorial wrote outlining the scheme of erecting a handsome memorial building to be dedicated to the memory of the Waikato soldiers who had taken part in the present war, and to he used by them as a Soldiers’ club, etc. The letter asked the board to give some idea of the financial support which would be forthcoming from Matamata. It was resolved that the various local institutions, including the County council and Farmers’ unions, be invited to send a representative to a meeting to be held in Matamata on Saturday, 20th inst., when the question of supporting the Hamilton memorial or of instituting a local one could be fully discussed. WATER TROUGH. The chairman stated that he had interviewed the manager of the Glaxo factory with regard to the supply of water for a trough to be situated at the side of the road near the factory, and that the manager had signified his willingness to supply the water. Further details were left in the chairman’s hands to arrange. TELEPHONE TO TAURANGA. Mr Pohlen mentioned that he had been approached by various settlers in regard to completing the telephone line to Tauranga. It was stated that there remained only eight miles to be connected up, and the completion of the work was urgently desired by the residents of both districts. It was decided that the Telegraph Department be asked to put the work in hand, and that in the meantime the County councils, Farmers’ unions, and the Tauranga Borough council be asked to give the matter their support. SUNDAY TELEPHONE SERVICE. Mr Pohlen also moved that the Telegraph Department be asked to grant a Sunday bureau service in the local post office consisting of an hour in the morning and the same in the evening. This also received unanimous support. SANITATION. The sub-committee deputed to go into the question of sanitation delivered its report. The report was a comprehensive statement of the sanitary conditions existing in the town, and also contained recommendations for a sanitary system calculated to minimise the risks of infectious diseases. The chairman stated that in his opinion sanitation was the most serious question which the board had to face. The question was one which had as its issue not merely the convenience of the public, shut the safeguarding of public health, and there was no question as to which demanded the more immediate attention. After considerable discussion various measures were adopted, and a further committee appointed to make additional arrangements. v
ELECTRIC LIGHTING AND POWER.
Mr Vosper drew the attention of the board to the annual general meeting of the Farmers’ union to be held on the 26th inst. in the Town Hall at which, he explained, a qualified electrician was being invited to give an address on the subject of electric lighting and driving power. He considered that the board should support the idea, as street lighting was a matter which would shortly be engaging the board’s attention. Mr Banks stated that he was in full agreement with Mr Vosper’s remarks. He thought the board should support the proposal. It was decided that the board should support the Farmers’ union action, and also that a letter be sent to the superintendent of the Waihi Goldmining Coy. asking him for particulars and details regarding the supply of electric power to the board. TREE PLANTING IN STREETS. On Mr Vosper’s motion it was decided that inquiries be made from leading horticulturalists as to the most suitable trees for planting in streets.
