TROOPERS’ FAREWELL.
Public Function. Last Saturday, April 6, a farewell afternoon was tendered by the Matamata Patriotic association to Troopers G. Carolan and VV. Barugh, who were home on final leave. The hall was tastefully decorated for the occasion and a number of residents assembled to bid “au revoir ” to the boys whom they knew so well. The president of the Patriotic association, Mr J. Price, in his opening address said that he was sure that none of those who had left were better known to the residents than the guests that afternoon and that they would carry away with them the esteem and good wishes of Matamata. There then followed a musical programme which was thoroughly enjoyed by everybody, the contributors being: selection, Mr and Mrs Darby; song, Miss Ross; song, Mr Smales; pianoforte solo, Miss Kusabs ; song, Miss Herrick; instrumental selection, Mrs Darby and Miss North ; song, Mr Randall ; song, Mr Moody. The president of the patriotic committee then presented Troopers Carolan and Barugli with a wallet each as a little token of esteem and wished them “God Speed.” He hoped it would not be very long before they were back again, having helped to secure a victorious peace. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies, and the singing of the National Anthem brought this function to a close. During the afternoon the chairman, Mr Price, moved a vote of condolence with Mr and Mrs A. G. Yardley and family in connection with the loss sustained by them in the death of their little daughter.
A very pleasant farewell afternoon was tendered by the expupils of the Matamata dancing class to Trooper William Barugh and Gordon Carolan, who were home on leave, on Friday afternoon last. The function was held in Misses Storey & Neals’ rooms, and there was a large attendance. Mr J. Price occupied the chair. A presentation of a safety razor was made to each of the guests, with words for their good fortune from the chairman. Opportunity was also taken to present Private J. Kilbride, who was unable to be present, with a pocket-book, through Dr. Carolan. The doctor and Trooper Barugh suitably responded. Songs or instrumental items were nicely rendered by Miss Neal, Dr. Carolan, Mr P. C. Ingham and Mr Yardley.
