TURANGA-O-MOANA.
The Red Cross guild of Turanga-o-moana held a very successful function on Wednesday evening. It consisted of dancing, speechifying and a sumptuous supper. “ The Mayor of Matamata,” Mr Price, opened the proceedings with a speech suitable to the occasion. The Rev. R. W. Jackson delivered an address and in the course of his remarks stated that he ( had watched the dancers with a peculiar interest, and had discovered that the faces of those who moved with measured steps wore a grave aspect which was quite unexpected on his part. Then, after a brief pause, he suggested that dancing not unfrequently led to marriages and that marriages were among the most momentous contracts of human life. The musical part of the programme was exceptionally good and thoroughly appreciated] by the large audience. The recalls were numerous and well merited. Items were rendered by Mrs Wade (Waharoa), Mrs Gibson, Miss Maisey, Miss Scott, Miss Harding (Turango -o - moana)i\ Miss Heaps (Matamata) and Messrs Pannett (Hinuera), Kennedy (Manawaru), Ridley (Tur-anga-o-moana) and T. Heaps (Matamata). The music was kindly supplied by Mr P. Ingham. The duties of M.’sC. were carried out by Messrs F. Harding and J. Boulcott.
