ON THE SCREEN.
Nancy's Birthright. Nancy's Birthright, is to be screened at Matamata on Satururday evening. The story of the play shows that the daughter of John Martingale, a rich manufacturer, left her home to marry one of her father's employees, who turned out a drunkard and a criminal. When her baby girl was born, the mother sent word to Martingale that he was a grandfather, but the man hardened his heart against the child. When the mother died the child is adopted by Leslie Warner and his mother. Sixteen years later, Warner, who is now manger for Martingale, finds that his affection for the child has grown into love for the woman, not knowing however that she is Martingale's grand-daughter. Martingale in the meantime, lonely and heartbroken, has searched for the girl, but without success. He determines to adopt an orphan girl, and leave her his wealth. This gives an opportunity to a criminal gang to work a swindle. They determine to find a girl from the slums whom they can control, and to split the old man's money between them. Nancy's father, one of the gang, accidentally discovers his lost daughter and determines to use her to gain his ends, but she refuses, even after terrible experiences. By the aid of her lover, and an unexpected friend among the gang, a hideous hunchback, she escapes and goes to Martingale to warn him of the plans of the gang. The programme also includes one of the latest Gaumont. graphic and a two thousand feet comedy.
