On Wednesday, 23rd inst, a farewell social was tendered to Mr and Mrs Fred Johnston, who have left this district for Morrinsville. There was a large attendance and during the evening Mr Tong presented Mr and Mrs Johnston with a salad of oak and silver as a mark of esteem from Waharoa friends, at the same time remarking that Mr Johnston, though not an old man by any moans, was an old resident of the district, having lived there from boyhood. In his reply of thanks Mr Johnston said he was not going far away, and so would not bid his friends good-bye but "au re voir." Miss Crawford, of Te Aroha, contributed a song. This lady has a charming voice and her music was much appreciated. Mr Gammell gave a recitation. Music for dancing was supplied by Blyth and Nickersen, Miss Ross and Mr Gammell, junr.- (violin). The supper arrangements were in, the capable hands of Mrs and the Misses McMillen and assistants. The singing of" Auld Lang. Syne" and "God Save the King" brought a very enjoyable evening to an end about 1 a.m. Among the returned soldiers expected here about the 14th February is Sergeant McGill of this district. He left with the 16th reinforcements in May, 1917. He was gassed at Armentieres and severely wounded at Flanders. Mr and Mrs Willis are visiting Waharoa. They are the guests of Mrs Wright. Mrs Walton has returned from Auckland, where she has been visiting her daughter Mrs Clow.
