EXTRAORDINARY TRAFFIC.
Matamata Road Breaking Up. The question of alleged damage being done to the Matamata - Waharoa road by the "Glaxo" motor lorries was reported upon by the engineer of the Matamata County council on Tuesday. He said that in company with Crs. Banks and Pohlen, he had met Mr H. E. Pacey and inspected the road. Continuing he said : " We met a motor lorry weighing about five tons and carrying two and a quarter tons of milk and drawing a trailer carrying the same amount of milk. There was considerable diversity of opinion between us as to the effect of the traffic on the road. Mr Pacey does not admit any liability and no arrangement was arrived at. I have been over the road several times since and find that the damage is becomingmore apparent, and planks have been broken in one of the bridges. The road should be kept under observation until the end of the season for heavy traffic, and conditions noted." Cr. Pohlen said his opinion was that damage was being done by the motor lorries. He would like to see the chairman and engineer go over the road in question and compare it with other roads.
■ Cr. Banks said when the conference was held in Matamata Mr susfc, -Auckland city engineer, was in tlie 't"6wh and given it as his opinion that if the speed of the lorries was reduced to ten miles an hour they would do less damage than would the number of milk carts which would have to be used, j Cr. Pohlen: I am confident that the speed has not been reduced. I have watched the lorries and they do not keep to the one track, but travel all over the road. We have to protect the 200 ratepayers who paid for the road. Cr. Banks: The lorries are running for the settlers, who, if any extra tax is charged, will have to pay both way 3 for the road. It was not Messrs Nathan and Co. or the New Zealand Dairy association who would have to pay. Cr. Rollett thought Cr. Banks had made out a good case. He suggested that the whole of the council should inspect the road.
The latter suggestion was adopted.
