Teachers’ Tour

Many teachers, and other people interested in Island cultures, are enquiring about a tour to be held in May, 1978, to Samoa, Tonga and Fiji. The tour coincides with the May school holidays in New Zealand, which differ by a week from those in Samoa this year. This happy circumstance has led the Ministry of Education to invite teachers to visit schools in session.

The group leaves New Zealand on May 5 and spends four days at Apia sightseeing and visiting schools and villages. Three days are then spent at Savaii staying at the fale style Savaiian Guest House. Arrangements for visiting in Samoa are being made by a Samoan matai. After flying to Nukalofa, the tour group will spend four days at the International Dateline Hotel. Homes and church services may be visited and dances, feasting and visits to scenic spots are all on the itinerary. Special arrangements have been made with the Governments of Tonga and Western Samoa and the group will be able to gain a better understanding of the customs, values and way of life of these people. To this end, arrangements are being made for study classes to be held at the Pacific Islands Educational Resource Centre in Herne Bay.

The final stop on the tour will be four to five days in Fiji where the group will visit out-of-the-way places as well aS' see the wonderful Coral Coast from Nadi to Suva, go shopping, sightseeing, swimming and generally get the feel of the Islands.

The return to Auckland will be on 23 May. There are still a few places available on this tour, which has the services of a tour escort.
