Multi-cultural Television

Maoris and other Polynesians are to have exclusive access to 47 fifteen-minute programmes on South Pacific Television. The programme, ‘Pacific Viewpoints’ begins on Sunday March 2.

Producer, Bert Dearne, says the programme is a service one and offers Maoris and Pacific Islanders a vehicle to communicate their different cultural and social perspectives. “It will be an honest exposition , . . and I’d prefer not to see a white face on the programme,” he says. The programme is to reflect New Zealand’s multicultural society and my help to break down barriers between different ethnic groups he adds. Criticism of the mono-cultural content of New Zealand television has led South Pacific Tele-

vision into producing ‘Pacific Viewpoints’. ‘Pacific Viewpoints’ will be fronted by the newly appointed number two man at Maori Affairs, John Rangihau with help from Napi Waaka. Many Maori and other Polynesian groups have been contacted about participating in the series which is being produced by South Pacific Television’s Hamilton section. Individuals or groups who wish to participate in the series can contact the Producer, South Pacific Television, Box 9544, Hamilton.
