FERN FLAT.

(from our own correspondent). We have had splendid weather lately and it has given every body and every thing fresh energy. It has brought to view the gay fruit blossoms, and has, in fact, improved the appearance of both animal and vegetable kingdoms in general. Ploughs and harrows have been busily engaged iu connection with farming operations ; and the " precious metal " seekers have been miking hay while the „sun shines. A few weeks of this delightful sort of weather would be acceptable to some, but this is not the case with all as shortness of water for gold digging would be felt. What a boon it would be if all could be separately favoured with weather to their taste, and what a variety of climates we would have in every locality. We were treated to a performance by Mr Foley, on Tuesday night (21st), who evidenty preferred doing a little business to remaining idle. There was a very fair attendance and the performance seemed to meet with g neral satisfaction. On Saturday, 25th, a meeting to form a Cricket club was held at Fern Flat which was well attended. Upper Buller is thus showing up in the sporting line and with proper management and sufficient patron age, both of which are cheap articles here, we ought to be able to produce a team that would be able to give a very good account of itself in any matches we might be able to arrange. A second meeting will be held at Hampden on the evening of the Ball, Friday, October Ist. I hope Lyell can be induced to follow our example, as we will shortly be in a position to issue them a challenge, and I slightest, doubt also dress

A meeting of the Jockey Ciub followed the cricketers' meeting, and though I am not acquainted with the particulars I think a satisfactory state of things was the result. Lyell, I have no doubt will also largely patronise the Jockey Club as it is got up to afford a general day's outing for Fern Flat and surrounding districts. Such a popular movement is deserving of encouragement.
