• London, February 8. Mr John Laish, Q.C., Solicitor-General of Ireland in the last Gladstone Ministry, has been appointed Lord Chancellor of Ireland. February 9. Order has at length been restored in West End after the riotous proceedings ot the unemployed. The amount of damage done has not been fully estimated, but it is known to be immense. Crowds of roughs assembled this morning in Trafalgar Square and the vicinity, but were dispersed. The jewellers' shops, however, remained closed in anticipation of further violence. Public opinion, generally, blames the police for their inaction in face of the riotous proceedings yesterday.
