In accordance with announcement, a public meeting ol residents was held at Mr Inglig' office on 'Monday evening List, to adopt some measures in the ot protection from fire. Considering the object, it was thought the township would be well represented, but this oocasion. furnished no exception to the rule which 'has become pretty well established, and according to which, it would s/?eni 'that matter* for the public good, >or in the interests of the place generally, .have «to be carried on by'two or three individual*, and these parties, in turn,'to'be abused and blamed with all sorts of imaginary-' ulterior motives. Really, the amount of apathy and in&ifferenco which crops to the surface here now and again, in matters whieh concern all alike, would -almost furnish a pretext for a lot of onr backwardness. But then, as the saying has it, that whieh is everyones business, us nobody's business. We aw glad, however, to see that the steps at the meetin ,T lield on Monday are likely to have -some •result; inasmuch as the nucleus of a! Brigade has been formed, and during the week, the township Imis been canvassed 'for subscriptions towards a fund to provide apparatus. If this is pretty liberally met with, the Brigade-will be in a position to apply for the County bonus, and then put'their appliances in iueh a state of ■efficiency, as any emergency, such as that likely to arise at any moment, would demand. The County Council has passed a resolution suggesting that a local body. 'Such as the local Brigade, or atommittee, ab.suld be formed to have full control of 'the water-works, .and tke reserve ; by "which means, the conservation of the supply could be better looked after-: the Council to subsidibe all cost of maintaining repair and efficiency. The idea is s> good one and likely to be £iven eftect to, as, at present, the thing is in no way • satisfactory, and the water is always •being tampered with. Local authority is essential, but whon matters are placed on
a proper footing, it will be less difficult to make some very material improvements ; prominently amongst them,—the alteration of reservoir, ani lining «f same with concrete.
