ACCLIMATISATION.
CANTERBURY SOCIETY. MEETING OF COUNCIL. The council of tho North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society met Inst evening, Mr IV. 11. Tisdall presiding over a good attendance of members. The Department of Internal Affairs wroto stating that the boundaries of tho society’s district, as gazetted, required no confirmation. Tho Department of Internal Affairs wroto asking the views of the society regarding the advisability of liberating opossums in New Zealand. The matter of replying to the letter was referred to tho Executive Committee.
Tho Department also wrote asking the society to furnish a quarterly statement in regard to tho proceeds from tho sale of swan eggs. The secretary reported that ho had replied that the collection was just starting, and a retMrn would be forwarded in tlireo months’ time.
The chairman reported that up-to-dato sixty-seven cases of seven dozen eggs each hpd been sent in, of a total value of £B7 IGs sd\
Tho Citizens’ Defence Corps wrote enclosing a copy of a letter from Captain Hardham, V.C., suggesting that complimentary fishing licenses should be issued to soldiers in the convalescent hospital at Ilanmer, as was dene bv tho North Island societies.
It was decided to issue complimentary licenses to returned soldiers, tho licenses to he terminable upon discharge from military services, and granted through tho C.D.C. Tho South Canterbury Society wrote expressing approval of the society's resolution on the subject of “strokehauling.” Mr J. F. Robiesou wroto regarding the suggestion that a branch of tho society should ho formed at Ilanmer, forwarding a list of names of persons likely to take an interest in the branch.
Mr E. Hardcastlo moved that the matter should he referred to the executive with the object of taking steps to form a branch at Haumcr. The motion was carried. It was decided to forward to kindred societies lists of persons convicted unclor the Animals Protection Act and the Fisheries Conservation Act. with a request that licenses shoulu not be issued to such persons. Tho financial statement showed receipts amounting to £2l 16s od, ana a credit balance over expenditure m £l6 14s scl. Accounts amounting to £32 Os 3d were passed for payment. The curator in his report stated that trout ova had been liberated as lmlowsAvon, 10,009; Ashley 25,000; Cam, 10,000; Heathcote, 30,000; Waimakariri, 100,000; __ East Oxford. 10.000; Hwrunui. 25,000; A lctoria Lake 40.000; Leader, 10.000: Southbridge. 20,000. Three thousand brown and 2000 rainbow fry had been sent to tho Chatham Islands, but died on the voyage. The report was adopted. It' was decided to liberate 00.000 rainbow fry in Lake Pearson. The meeting then sat in committee, and on resuming, adjourned.
