LABYRINTH OF TRENCHES.
SITUATION AS VIEWED BY PRISONERS. (Received January 3, 3.20 p.m.) LONDON, January '2
An eye-witness says that fighting is proceeding on ground which both sides have been excavating in all directions for weeks, until it has becomo a perfect labyrinth of crossings and recrossings. Somo prisoners take a gloomy now of the situation. ' They' are conscious that tho war will last much longer than they at first expected, but as it is waged entirely in the enemy's country thev do not realise that they are fighting what must eventually be a losing cause. They believe that Russia lias suffered a decisive defeat, that France is exhausted and ready to make peace, and that Britain is decadent and the people engrossed with football. The Germans have not felt yet the pinch of want or lack of men or material. Their newspapers are doing their best to inspire fanatical hatred of the British.
