VIOLENT ARTILLERY DUELS

GERMANS LOSE HEAVILY AT STEINBACH.

(Received January 3, 3.30 p.m.) PARIS, January 3.

An official report states:—

We easily repulsed attacks at numerous points on Thursday night. There were artillery duels in the Arras, Albert and Royc regions and particularly violent duels in the dunes near Niouport and at Zonnebeke. The enemy blew up two caissons between Beaumetss and Achicourt, south of Arras. We wrecked trenches at Parviller.s and La Boisello and silenced mine throwers in front of Fricourt. Our artillery silenced the enemy's artillery and dispersed several bodies in the Aisno region. We have established ourselves in pits on the plateau of Nouvron, despite several counter-attacks. The enemy violently bombarded the Rheinis region.' We carried a wood on the north-east of Mean il-les-Hu Has, regained ground' in the Bois de la Grurie, progressed in the Bois lo Pretro, repelled an attack at Bromenil, north east of Badonviller and carried three more lines of houses at Steinbacb. 'Hie Germans lost heavily at Breinenil and Sieinbach.
