LANOASTEB PABK v. PHOENIX. Like its predecessor, this matoh is, so far, remarkable for heavy scoring. The visitors again lost the toss, and had to take their station in the field. Mr Stevens, one of the first batsmen in, was kindly treated at the start, and thus encouraged, he played in his old form, and was still not out at lunch time. Unfortunately, he had to retire, and did not reaoh the ground again in time to resume his innings. However, Mr Wilding gave a lot of trouble to the bowlers, and, playing much more steadily than usual, reaped the reward in the excellent total of 88. When he had reached 87 he gave a chance in the slips, whioh produced a run and nothing more, but repeating this the following over, the error was fatal. Mr Beeves scored 21 in the course of three or four overs, and then fell a victim to a bumpy one. Mr Taylor contributed 27 in good style, two off-drives being particularly fine hits, and the innings closed for 254. The hour that was left enabled the Phoenix to run up 60 or 60 for the loss of two wickets, both through Mr Wilding's agency, one secured by a fine catch at point and the other by a nice break-tack, which disposed of Mr Vernon soon after his appearance at the wickets. Messrs Davenport and Harris were not out, with 26 and 18 a-piece. The match will be continued to-day. A match was played at Leeston last Tuesday between an eleven of the Leeston Club and an Eleven of the old Ellesmere Club, which resulted in a victory for the Leeston Club by two wiokets. The game had created a good deal of interest, and there were a large number of visitors present. The scores were—Old Ellesmere Club, 6.1 and 72 ; Leeston, 62 and 72 for 8 iriokets. A match between the Sheffield and Greendale Clubs was played on Saturday, at the ground of the latter, and resulted in a win for the home team by three wickets. The scores were—Oreendale, 63 and 38 for 7 wiokets; Sheffield, 29 and 71. For the former team, G. Wilson 27, and for the latter, G. Land 26 and 3. Marsden 22 were the principal scorers. G. Wilson and J. Clydesdale were respectively the most successful with the ball.
