HOBOBATA BACKS. The threatening aspect of the weather did not discourage holiday-makers attending these races, and on Tuesday there was, a tolerable gathering on the course, whioh, from want of rain, was hard and dusty. On the whole, the meeting was a most successful one, but the Hace Committee would add much to the success of future meetings if a few alterations were made in some of their arrangements. An excellent brass band played during the day, and a totalisator circulated the cash of those of a speculative turn, a larger sum than was expected having been passed through it altogether. The following is a detailed account of the racing:— Maiden Piatb, of 10 sovs, and sweepstake of 10s for starters; weight for age. One mile. Mr "B. Derritt'a b g Haideo (Derritt) 1 Mr Brown's b g Shark ... .. ... (P. Baker) 2 Mr Traffiord'B b g Thornicroft ... ("Ward) 3 Blink Bonny, Hero, EBca, and Druid also ran. Blink Bonny cut out the running for half-a-mile; Shark, who for some cause or other, waited till the lot had got 40 yards away, gradually crept up, and at the distance challenged Haidee, who was leading. A sharp' struggle up the straight resulted in a viotory for Haidee by two lengths; Thornioroffc a fair third. Time—lmin 68seo. Mr Brown lodged a protest, on the ground that Haidee was a four-year-old, but entered as a three-year-old. This protest is not yot decided. It was gonorally thought that the latter would win, but some knowing ones rightly seleoted Haidee, hor excellent condition and free style of going being all in her favour. Mr Brown rode with groat judgment, but the filly was too good for him ; and coming away at the turn won easily by three
lengths. Mr Brown entered a protest, on the ground that Haidoe was entered as a three yoar old, being in *<»llty a four-year-old, whioh is notyetdeoidod. Time—Bmin 15soo. At tho threequartor, Brco" befian to creep up, and Flirt hoisted a signal of distress, leaving Thornicroft at the head of affairs. Turning into the straight, Breeze got on terms with him. Tho youngster smuggled gamoly.to tho finish, but tho strength of the top weight landed Breeze a winner by a short length, Mr Trafford'e horse a good second. This was the best raoe of the day from the outsider's point of viow and both horses were loudly cheered on returning to the saddling paddock. A Hack Raoh wound up a good day's sport. AUCKLAND RACES.
