Th Evening News states that Lord Reading (British Ambassador to the United States) has returned from America in order to suggest an Anglo-American defensive and offensive alliance. Received this day, 11.30 a.m. Washington, .August 14. It is officially denied that Lord Reading's visit to London is in connection with any Anglo-Amer-ican alliance.
OIL TANKER SUNK. Received this day,_9.3o a.m. New York, August 14. Submarines in the Atlantic sank an oil tanker and seven of the crew nr missing. BRITISHERS ESCAPE. Received this day, 11.30 a.m. London, August 14. On the Vesle front some hunger stricken Britishers escaped and arrived in the American lines after passing through the "German barrage. They were captured in the Marne fighting < and they spent seven days and nights after escaping from a German prison camp. They declare that the British prisoners were beaten by German soldiers and were living on horsemeat. : -
