LEVIN PATRIOTIC SOCIETY.
The regular monthly meeting of tho Executive of the above Society was held at the Borough Council Chamlbers on Fridaiy night. Those present were Messrs C. Blenkhorn (in the chair), B. It. 'Gardener, P. iW. Goldsmith, -D. S. Mackenzie, W. Hughes, -F. O. Smith, O. S. Kcedwell (Hon. Secretary) and Mns P. W. Goldsmith. An apology for non attendance was received from Mrs Gardener. The secretary of the Wellington Rose and Ga rniaiion Club wrote asking the assistance of the committee in procuring from this district -gifts <of flowers, plants, etc., to be sold an Wellington on Rose Day, 7th December, in aid of tflie N. Z. Trained Nurses Memorial Fund.. This fund, which is now being raised throughout New Zealand, has for its object .tlie providing of as>ustanoe for trained nurses who through sicknessi, old age, or necessity may re. quire help. It was decided that an effort should be made to get some gentleman interested in an effort of thiis sort to take the mattter in 'hand and organise an appeal in Levin at the proper time. It was also mentioned that the Red Cross Shop could be used the diay before as a ,receiving and forwarding depot, so \>he public may ex\pect to hear more of tihis, a's Messrs Bl'enlkhorn and Goldsmith were deputed to endieavourr to arrange with a suitable organiser. The secretary reported having that day received a dlieque from Mei-srs Abraham and Williams for '19s, beung proceeds of some posts sold at tlie yards on account of Messrs -MaciDonald Bros, Beaoli Road, andl which walto he handed to V.-he Red Cross 1< and. The donation was thankfully received. Mrs A. W. Richter wrote resigning her membership of the committee on account of her dieparture. from ILevin consequent on Mr Richter's go'.ixg into camp. The chairman spoke of the splendid work Mrs Richter had done in patriotic matters, having been since tilie beginning a consistent unselfish worker and they were all sorry to lose her services. He moved that Mrs Richter be written to expressing regret at her departure. Mr Gardener brought up the master of the action of the Soldiers Financial Assistance Board in only meeting the portion of a soldier's nates from tho date the Board decided to grant assist, ance, intfsead of the full current yeai, and 'he thought some protest should be made, as the statement that t)he Board was prepared to meet these charges was somewhat misleading. It was decided liiat a letter of protest should be sent to the Board'.
The secretary (Mrs Goldsmith) of tlio Ladies' Red Cross Committee advised that her committee liadi decided to vote the sum' of £10 towards the appeal on behalf of the 'Refugees' Hot-pit-al in France for which the N.Z. Government is responsible for two of three years. J|'j was considered tliaii a cusili do 1 - nation would prove of more use than endeavouring to send garments as suggested in the appeal. With regard to the vacancy on the committee it was decided to invite Mrs F. E. Plasiter to accept the position, it being felt that Mrs Plaster lias alwiays phown a keen interest in patriotic affairs. A number of accounts, certified by the 'Ladies' Committee as correct, were formally passed for payment, at the conclusion of the meeting.
