OBITUARY.

MRS JAMES SMELLIE. News of the death of Mri James Smellie, wife of the mauager of the Levin Dairy Company, caused a painful shock to thuir many friends in Levin last evening and cast quite a glnom over the town. The deceased lady had only been ill a few days, and up to Sunday it appeared as if she would be about again very soon. A turn for thn worse came on Sunday evening, aud on Monday, after a medical consultation, she was removed to the Otaki Hospital. An operation was performed on Tuesday morning, and was very successful, but though the patient appeared to rally, it was only apparent aud she gradually sank during the afternoon and quietly passed away about 6 p.m. yest. rday.

Mrs Smellie's death removes from the community a personality that held a high and respected place in th ) love and affection of her friends. She" was a lady who, though always foremost in good works, lovec! 1 to perform hi r private benefactions without show or ostentation. Much of her enthusiasm was devoted to the service of the' Presbyterian Church, and she was an inspiring force in all movements for th« advancement of the Church. She was secretary of the Presbyterian Women's Mission Union, and an ardent and loyal teacher in the Sunday School practically during the whole of her residence in Levin, being much beloved by teachers au.l scholars alike for the Christian spirit aud earnestness with which she imbued her work, and for her cheery kindliness. Her death will, make an irreparable breach in the rank»of church workers, but she leaves with her friends and associates the inspiration of an unselfish life of service and a memory fragrant witu the savour of good works and generous deeds. To the bereaved husbaud and daughter the sincere sympathy of their friends will go out. Messrs John and Jas. Stevenson, of the State Farm, and Mr Chas. Stevenson, of the Government Dairy Instruction staff, are brothers of tlie late Mrs Smellie, and another is on active service.

The funeral will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. aiul a special memorial service will be held at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning. The Sunday School anniversary services arranged for Sunday have been postponed in the meantime.
