Tlio Church Army authorities celebrated a "Hut Day" at Hawera one day last week and raised £800 as the result of the effort. This amount will be distributed as follows; £400 for the hut, £250 for upkeep for twelve months, £150 for Military Affairs Committee.
An old resident of the Village fciettlement, Mr Moxom, met with a nasty accident yesterday. While driving his 'jiap on the Batholomew l'oadi lie attempted to pasr another vehicle, but the road proved, to be too narrow and the cart capsized. iMr Moxom was thrown heavily and sustained a severe shaking. Mr Fred Pink, a well-known local resident had the mi-fortune to be thrown from his motor car as he was on the point of alighting on Tuesday evening, and was rather severely bntis_ ed. Yesterday he was at business as usual but to-daiy is confined to his. bed suffering the severe after-effects of the shaikimg fio received.
A concert and dance in aid of the funds of St. Andrew's Church is bo held in iFarland's theatre on Monday evening next. The promoters Hi wo securedi tine services of a number of well-known outside to rein, force popular local talent. Among the singetrs are 'Mrs C. P. iNash, a leading Palmerston vocalist ,Mrs '3>'Atb, of Otnki, and Miss Gray of Levin. O'Rourke, of Otaki, Miss (Nellie iLyons and Mr Ken Aibken will be heard in recitations; and Mrs Leslie McDonald and Miss IC. are. to contribute pianoforte selections. In compliance with the request of the Labour Party, Mr Webb has definitely announced himself as a candidate for the Grey seat. Speaking in the Opera House at Greymouth he said he stood a3 the avowed enemy of the Government, whom he invited to come to the electorate and help vote him out. He hoped the election would not be conducted on the "win the war" cry, but as a test of approval or otherwise of the National Government's policy on the cost of living question and on its war measures particularly.

Cr Catley referred to the liiitle knowledge Of County affairs possusse'ed by many ratepayers. Recently ha had been speaking to some of them about the Council's financial diffieultiaand the fact that it 'had liquidated i|is overdraft. He mentioned also that the rates collected amounted to some £14000. One ratepayer's comment in regard to the wiping-out of the overdraft was : "Surely it did not take much brains to do j':hat. It's as eauy as falling off a log." The Te iHoro conn, cillor said his reply was that he would sooner try the log any day. Cr Stephenson said his experience wak that the County Councillor was the most abused man in the Do as he would, he might get the thanks and goodwill of many of t'he ratepayers but there would always be a balance who would pull l against him.
On Monday night at Otaki, No. Gl Company of Cadets giave a social and diance in aid of the Red Cross funds. A very pleasant evening was spent and the w'hole turn-out was voted a. complete success. There was a large attendance and the floor wnt= in good order. The danee music was supplied by Miss Cook, of Otaki. During the evening the following contributed to the programme : Col.-Ser.gt. lHalton, of Otaki, eong and recitation ; Miss -Win. dley (Te Horo), recitation ; Sergp.-Ma-jor Lid!dv (Levin), descriptive song ; Mioses Mima and May Cook (Otaki), Sailors' Hornpipe ; Misses Cotterell (Otaki), musical duet ; Miss P. Atkinson (Otaki), song. All the i('x;iris were encored. Sergt.JMajor iLiddy acted a.s M.O. and carried out life duties very capably. Dancing lasted till 2 o'clock. The manyi ladies who helped with the supper are worthy of special mention. About £10 5s was taken at the door.
