ROTARY

At the weekly meeting of the Queenstown Rotary Club members' stood in silence as a mark of respect for Mr B. L. Blodorn, incoming district governor of 53rd district, who lost his wife, to Mrs Wesney, wife of the late Mr D. J. Wesney, a member of the Invercargill Rotary Club,'" and for exrotarian James Thomson, who recently lost his wife.

The overseas toast, “ The Durban Club,” was given by Mr C. H. McKay.

“ Some Observations on Rural-urban Relations,” given in an address at the last rotary conference by Mr W. W. Mulholland, was read to the club by Mr W. Hayward. The address made pointed reference to the state of starvation in Europe. This, it stated, was due largely to the widespread and general shortage of farm workers. Pood, clothes and shelter are produced form the earth and mainly from its surface and without the services of the men and women who turn the soil, these fundamental necessities could not be obtained and the rest of the people could die. Drawing his conclusions, Rotarian Haywfftfd said that however much money was sent to the U.N.O. it could not buy food that did not exist. The address was followed by a useful discussion which made clear that farmers did not grow nearly as much wheat as formerly because of the labour situation and because there were better prices offered for other cereals.
