QUEENSTOWN DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

At a .meeting of the committee held last week it was decided to hold the Infant Children’s party in February next as the early closing of the school had precluded this function from being held. Accounts amounting to £3O 16s were passed for payment and arrangements were made to procure extra lighting shades and cleaning equipment for the schools. An application from Mrs B. C. Johnston, Lower Shotover, for an extension of . the school-bus route was recommended to the Education Board subject to the present time table not being delayed. The secretary stated that labour had been obtained to clear the ■* noxious weeds growing on the school property. The Central Southland Bible Class District Committee was granted the use of the school buildings for the May holidays, 1948, subject to the usual conditions. * It was resolved to accept the offer of Messrs Armstrong and Springhall, Ltd., to service the four school typewriters on a contract basis. The Education Board wrote stating that the appointment of Mr Norman Pearce as an extra probationary assistant had been cancelled owing to the fact that five Southland students had been selected for a third year’s term at the Training College. HEADMASTER’S REPORT The headmaster submitted his report for the period stating that the attendance had been good, not being affected to any extent by the demand for boys to engage in seasonal labour. Owing to the abrupt closing of the schools no End-of-the-year functions had been held. Annual prize winners wore: — Secondary School Dux, Florence Adams; Primary Dux, Eon Lewis; Rotary Essay, Allison Johnston. The headmaster stated that the school had been visited by the Physical Education Instructors, the Agricultural Instructor and the Senior Inspector Mr Mills accompanied by Mr Whitwell. All expressed satisfaction with the work being done. Mr Forbes expressed his gratitude for the splendid service given by Mr L. C. N. Wilder, the School Agricultural Club’s Supervisor for his personal interest in the club’s activities and his annual inspection of the members’ gardens, also for his invest and practical assistance in the improvement of the school grounds. The school was indebted to Mr E. R. Hopwood and Mr M. T. Robertson in their efforts, to acquaint the senior pupils of local body election matters by conducting a mock-election. The headmaster conveyed seasonal greetings to the members of the committee, which were'reciprocated by the chairman.
