“The Sparkling Waters of Whakatipua”

a In the forward to this new publication written by Florence Mackenzie, Alan Mulgan, 0.8. E., states—“ This country needs local histories ” and “ a local history should be written by someone who has roots in the district.” The roots of the Mackenzie family go deep into Queenstown and in this, her most recent work, Mrs Mackenzie has given to Queenstown what is probably the most comprehensive historical record yet written about the district. It is seldom that an historical record makes easy reading, but in “ The Sparkling Waters of Whakatipua ” the careful blending of humour and anecdote creates within the reader are absorbing interest which one finds difficult to resist. “ The Sparkling Waters of Whakatipua ” is composed of eleven chapters, thirteen illustrations and has as an inset a detailed map of the district. When it is known that four years have been taken to compile this work some indication of the wealth of information which this book contains is given but it is not until the book is read that its real worth becomes apparent. To the publishers and printers Messrs G. H. and G. W. Reed and the Budget Ltd., credit is given for an excellent production. Queenstown may well feel proud of her daughter, Florence Mackenzie and everv home Will be the richer for having this book on its shelves. Copies may be obtained from Mr G. V. Wilkinson for the moderate price of 10s fid.
