FIRE THREAT

A grass fire, which started on Monument Hill on Wednesday afternoon, was fortunately extinguished before any property was seriously damaged. Starting on a vacant section the fire quickly spread to the property of Mr James Perrow, sweeping round the hill towards the monument. Lack of fire-fighting equipment was a drawback, but men, women and children were quickly on the scene and worked hard to control the fire. The origin of the fire is unknown, but fortunately the southerly wind swept the fire away from the houses, although it was really due to the splendid co-operation of all that serious damage was averted.
