WAKATIPU SKI CLUB

Official Opening

The Wakatipu Ski Club opened its season for 1947 at the Club’s hut, Coronet Peak, on Sunday, July 6. There was a full attendance of members and many visitors were also present. The day was fine and clear with an absence of wind, and the snow was in excellent condition for ski-ing purposes. In his opening remarks the president (Captain G. A. Herbert) made reference to the rapid progress the, club had made since the cessation of hostilities. In 1945 there was not even a hut on the field, while now the club had erected an excellent three-roomed hut and the Mount Cook and Southern Lakes Tourist Co., Ltd., had installed one of the finest ski-tows in existence on the field, with good access to it. These amenities should greatly falicitate this sport and prove an added attraction to this popular resort. It was announced that the fixtures for the coming season would be as follows:—The Wigley Cup event on August 23 and 24, Otago University Ski Club’s Tournament between August 20 and 26, and events in connection with the Aorangi ffrophies between August 22 and 29. Arrangements were also in' train for the screening of a selected ski film on the evening of August 25 at 8 p.m., at the Embassy theatre. The club’s hut would be again available for use of visiting skiers for the purpose of leaving their surplus apparel, and tea would be provided at this hut for the usual nominal charge. The president then read messages received from the Minister of Internal Affairs, Tourist and Health Resorts, the general manager, Tourist and Health Resorts, and the president Otago Ski Club, extending their good wishes for an enjoyable and successful season. The president then declared the season opened, adding his own personal wishes and extending thanks to all who had assisted with the opening arrangements.
