PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE

Request for Bus Shelter The monthly meeting of the Queenstown Progressive League was held on Tuesday, June 10, when the president, Mr James McDonald, occupied the chair. The following members were present: —Messrs E. R. Hopwood, R. C. Robins, M. T. Robertson, 0. F. Wheatley and Miss B. Uagg, secretary. The Mount Cook and Southern Lakes Tourist Co. Ltd., wrote in reply to a request from the League asking that a bus shelter be erected at the corner of Frankton road and Stanley street, to afford shelter to passengers awaiting the buses’ departure, on the eastern terrace. The company stated that it was in sympathy with the proposal, and willing to provide its share if other interested parties were prepared to cooperate. The Minister of Railways advised that he was in receipt of this proposal and that his Department was investigating same. The Southland Progress League forwarded minutes of the meeting attended by local Members of Parliament and local bodies representatives.—lt was resolved to write thanking the league for the prominence it had given to the district, especially to the Glenqrchy road project. The secretary was instructed to write thanking Mr J. S. Dick, surveyor-gene-ral, who prepared and supplied several maps to the league. These maps embraced the whole tourist area of Wakatipu. It was decided to ask Mr Dick to enlarge one of these tracings, the same to be placed in a prominent position as an extra guide for tourists. The Officer-in-Charge, Government Tourist Department, asked for more information and the appropriate wording required for directing visitors to the various walks, etc. —Messrs McDonald, Robertson and Robins Avere appointed a sub-committee to deal with this matter. Mr McDonald to confer with the Automobile Association, Avhose o eers had been over the whole locality. A motion w r as carried asking the Southland Progress League to foster a movement, and agitate for a surface sealing to be placed on the State highway between Invercargill and QuecnstoAvn, and suggest that support be obtained from all tOAvns en route. It Avas considered that QueenstoAvn being the leading tourist resort in the South Island, should haA’o a first-class highway, and that the Main Higlnvays Board be approached on these terms. Foreshore Improvements At the request of the Public Works Department, the committee unanimously agreed to a plan submitted for foreshore improvements. The proposal submitted included the erection of swimming baths, paddling pool, erection of a cabaret, fun parlour and games (miniature bowls, etc.), and also the acquiring of all tions in blocks 14 and 15, if feasible a% the present time. The scheme also acji vocated the continuance of the promenade Avalk from the railway wharf to the one-mile creek, and the laying-off of this area in lawns and shrubs, and the providing of seating accommodation, and children’s playing facilities. The committee decided to inspect a proposed skating site, and find out the suitability of the area.
